MONTREAL — Culinary teams from local restaurants are going head to head in the Santropol Roulant 2nd Annual Iron Chef Competition in support of the organization’s Urban Agriculture Program.

The competition, set for today at the Edible Garden Campus in front of McGill University’s Burnside Hall, will have chefs using produce culled from the school’s garden.

“Montrealers have never been so excited about eating fresh and local and this event is a testament to that feeling of excitement around sustainable food,” said Noémie Desbiens-Riendeau, representative of Santropol Roulant’s Urban Agriculture.

The competing teams come from local restos including Lola Rose Café; McCord Café; The Green Panther; Laloux Restaurant; École Hotelière; Calixa Lavalée;, and Crudessence.

Teams will be expected to harvest vegetables and prepare meals in one hour. The dishes will be judged on taste, presentation, portion size and creativity. All participating restaurants have committed to raising $500 for the non-profit urban agriculture organization.
