TORONTO — Smartphone-wielding university students will be the first to experience Push a Deal, the new mobile service that alerts users to a deal when they are within the participating business’ vicinity.

In a partnership between contract caterers Aramark Canada and the University of Toronto, students at the St. George campus will be the first to receive deals on their smartphones for foodservice locations in their area.

The idea is simple. “Push a Deal is … the first service dedicated to delivering deals based on where a person is standing. When you are close to the deal, you will get an alert,” explains Steve Sorge, CEO of Mobile Fringe, creators of the app.

Push a Deal is expected to roll out to more Canadian cities and universities in the upcoming months, starting with Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal.

Mobile Fringe, the Toronto firm behind the Push a Deal service, launched in 2008 to create retail shopping apps for iPhone and Blackberry.
