New System Traces Seafood’s Origin

VANCOUVER — Foodservice operators and diners can now get all the details on their seafood’s journey to its plate with a new tagging system called Thisfish.

The British Columbia-based project begins with the fisherman who place plastic tags on their catch with details on who, where, when and how their seafood was landed. Once the product has been earmarked, the serial number on the tag can be entered into a search engine on the Thisfish website, to find its source.

The system has already tracked Atlantic lobsters from some 13 countries and in more than 170 cities, and two more pilot projects are planned for the Maritimes. “It started with 12 guys and since then we’sve had fishermen contact us wanting to get involved. We’sve had restaurants contact us that want access to tagged fish,” Ruth Inniss, Atlantic co-ordinator for Thisfish, is quoted as saying by Postmedia News.
