OTTAWA — Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the P.E.I. Fishermen’s Association want to help fishermen keep from taking illegal lobster, a practice that comes with heavy fines.

According to a story on cbc.ca, they will be hosting free information sessions in the coming weeks, to go over some of the important aspects of the regulations surrounding lobster fishing, such as how to tell males from females and how to tell if the females are carrying eggs.

The former president of the P.E.I. Fisherman’s Association knows all too well what one indiscretion can mean. Last year Kenny Drake pleaded guilty to having undersized lobster on his boat, was fined $6,000 and lost his licence for one day. He also lost his job as head of the association.

Rules regarding the size of lobsters pulled from the ocean are there to protect lobster stocks.  For the whole story, click here.
