CALGARY — Industry veterans Jeff Jamieson, Jesse Willis, Amy Turner and Justin Longpre have opened Donna Mac — a new neighbourhood restaurant — in Calgary’s Beltline district.

Located at the base of the Versus building on 10th Avenue, the restaurant features a menu of approachable favourites. Named after Turner’s grandmother, the all-encompassing hospitality concept echoes values of resourcefulness, community and humility.

Collectively, the team has developed a reputation in Calgary for creating memorable and unique hospitality experiences. Jamieson and Willis are best known for elevating Calgary’s wine and spirits scene with Vine Arts and Proof.

Donna Mac’s kitchen is helmed by Longpre, who has been sharpening his culinary skills for more than 10 years, previously under Justin Leboe of Model Milk, and most recently in developing the food program at Proof. Rounding out the team is Turner, who takes on the role of Operations Director and has managed many of Calgary’s most successful restaurants including Model Milk and Anju.

“Our purpose is to share with guests the flavours and conversations that inspire us in the moment,” says Turner, partner and Operations director. “My grandmother based her existence on resourcefulness, and we want this restaurant to emulate those same qualities.”

In the spirit of its namesake, Donna Mac will focus on culinary resourcefulness, sustainability and reducing food waste without compromising flavour or quality. The menu will rotate regularly and dishes will be prepared using as much of each whole ingredient as possible. Featured dishes include fingerling potatoes with porcini mayo, sea lettuce and king oyster mushrooms ($9); tortellini with eggplant, cashew cheese, tomato, pepper and seeds ($16); Beef Cheeks with jalapeño-and-cheddar potatoes, greens and jus ($35); and Pork Belly with sake-steamed clams, seaweed salad and fermented rice ($32).

Donna Mac will also boast a beverage program fueled by a partnership with Vine Arts. Rare and eclectic wines will be offered on a rotating list, providing guests access to new and inspiring notes and flavours. Nathan Head of Proof will spearhead the cocktail list.

Designed by Sarah Ward Interiors, the space embodies a sense of modest simplicity inspired by Brutalist architecture. Ward focused on strong, geometric forms and utilized materials such as hickory, leather, cork and brick to give the space warmth and sensuality. In line with Donna Mac’s community-centric nature, pieces donated from local artists complete the space.
