Now Open: El Habanero & Churrobar

TORONTO — Chef Angel Videaux Mencias has opened a brick-and-mortar location of his Cuban-inspired catering business.

El Habanero & Churrobar opened its doors on Steeles Ave. E. in Toronto, serving up authentic Cuban cuisine such as the popular El Cubano, a hot-pressed roasted pork sandwich with ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard ($10); Ban Stewed Chicken/Pollo Fricase, a slow-cooked chicken thigh in a rustic tomato base sauce and Cuban spices ($12.99); arroz moros (mixed rice and black beans, $5) and its famous churros (starting at $1.75 each).

After relocating to Canada from Havana, Cuba, where he worked in a number of five-star executive restaurants and hotels, chef Videaux Mencias and his wife Michelle decided they wanted to create something unique, unlike any other Cuban cuisine location found around the GTA and break down the misconceptions of what Cuban food is and serve “the real deal.” The result was the launch of El Habanero Catering, followed by Churrobar — a mobile Churro dessert bar.
