CHICAGO — Foodservice is going virtual, as Peapod, a virtual grocery store, has transformed Chicago’s State and Lake Tunnel into an online shopping experience.

Peapod’s service means commuters can shop, scan and schedule grocery deliveries from their smartphones.

The company has set up large ads across the busy commuter tunnel, so all shoppers need to do is scan the product QR code, download the app and start shopping by scanning the bar codes of the products featured in the ads; when they’re done, they schedule delivery.

“Peapod’s virtual store program for commuter rail stations is a creative, convenient way for passengers to multi-task and knock out their grocery shopping on the go,” said Mike Brennan, COO, Peapod.

Peapod rolled out its virtual rail pilot plan in Philadelphia in February on 15 commuter rail platforms; it resulted in 90 per cent repeat business.

It’s a trend that could spark interest on the foodservice side, generating possibilities for restaurant food deliveries and supplier orders.
