The government has asked some P.E.I. farmers to stop irrigating their crops with nearby rivers and streams due to dry weather, reports CBC News.
While the Environment Department is trying to protect the fish habitat in the streams, about 25 farmers that have permits to use streams and rivers to irrigate their fields are concerned they will lose half of their crop.
“We’ve got two buyers, Cavendish Farms and McCain, they depend on us to give them a good product. They employ a lot of people, we employ a lot of people, and there’s a balancing act involved here,” Greg McKenna, one of the farmers in the Emerald area, is quoted as saying by CBC News.
It’s been a particularly dry summer, with less than average precipitation in May and July.
