P.E.I. Spud Exports Spike

CHARLOTTETOWN — The number of potatoes set to be exported by Prince Edward Island this year is up, CBC News reports.

The Prince Edward Island Potato Board reported 50 per cent more island-grown spuds are heading abroad. In fact, two ships carrying potatoes left Summerside harbour for Russia and Venezuela this week.

Canada is in good shape for exporting, as other potato-growing countries, such as Russia, have dealt with difficult growing seasons. “We had a good crop, we have very good quality, and we have experienced exporters, [so] we are able to take advantage of this opportunity,” Greg Donald, general manager of the P.E.I. potato board, is quoted as saying by the CBC.
