The Prince Edward Island Potato Board reported 50 per cent more island-grown spuds are heading abroad. In fact, two ships carrying potatoes left Summerside harbour for Russia and Venezuela this week.
Canada is in good shape for exporting, as other potato-growing countries, such as Russia, have dealt with difficult growing seasons. “We had a good crop, we have very good quality, and we have experienced exporters, [so] we are able to take advantage of this opportunity,” Greg Donald, general manager of the P.E.I. potato board, is quoted as saying by the CBC.
