TORONTO — While many diners across the country may have had their fill of various fruit pies over the Easter break, the Toronto-based Duke Pubs took a walk on the savoury side this past weekend.

The Duke of York, a British-style pub in the heart of Toronto’s Yorkville neighbourhood, hosted the Duke Pubs’ second annual Chicken Pot Pie-Eating Contest.

The 10 enthusiastic contestants included locals from the GTA as well as participants from as far away as Boston, Dallas and London, England.

The Duke of York’s own Danja Lacasse hosted the event, and the competition was fierce right from the get-go. The results from the two preliminary heats were rather close, with the two fastest pie eaters from each heat advancing to the final.

After a 20-minute digestion period, the final four were ready to battle it out for the coveted first-place crown and prizes from Muskoka Cottage Brewery. A tense and exciting final saw George “The Engine” Hampson, hailing from the UK, take first place.

The three remaining contestants continued to inhale their pies, with Anton “The Bamboozler” Rubison taking second place and Ted “The A-Pie-A-Lator” Herman finishing in third. Derrek “Shu” Schnitzler had to settle for a respectable fourth place.
