Recipe Unlimited Falls Victim to Malware

VAUGHAN, Ont. — Some of Recipe Unlimited’s (formerly Cara Operations) restaurants experienced a partial network outage yesterday as the result of a “malware outbreak.”

According to the company, certain restaurants under the Swiss Chalet, Harvey’s, Milestones, Kelseys, Montana’s, Bier Markt, East Side Mario’s, The Landing Group of Restaurants and Prime Pubs brands were impacted.

The company learned of the malware outbreak on September 28 and began taking precautionary measures, including taking a number of systems offline and suspending internet access to affected locations. This left some restaurants unable to process credit- and debit-card transactions. Other locations chose to close temporarily while the service issues were being resolved.

Over the weekend, several customers also took to social media to complain of difficulties ordering online from Swiss Chalet.

“We are actively working in conjunction with our franchisees and employees in taking appropriate measures to limit the inconvenience on staff and customers,” stated a press release issued by Recipe Unlimited. “Our priority is to continue working diligently with third-party security experts and internal teams to resolve the situation as quickly and effectively as possible.”
