Restaurant Buzz: Arthurs Nosh Bar

A new nosh bar by Back of House Catering co-owners, Raegan Steinberg and Alex Cohen opened for business this summer in Montreal’s southwest borough, promising the very best in Jewish diaspora cuisine. At Arthurs, special emphasis is placed on improving and updating classic recipes without sacrificing the spirit and soul of the traditions. “We want Arthurs to feel like a young person with an old soul,” Cohen told Daily Hive. Arthur is named for Steinberg’s late father, whom she credits with having taught her everything she loves about food. The interior of the eatery — embracing both tradition and modernity — consists of penny-tiled floors, bistro chairs, letter-board menus, black-and-white family photos and a back bar lined with pickle jars. Arthurs doesn’t yet have a set menu — the couple are still experimenting heavily with their dishes, every day. “We’re not trying to do smoked meat, karnatzel, or be Schwartz’s or anything like that,” Steinberg told Montreal Eater. “Russ & Daughters was sort of my inspiration. Its history is so rich — you can’t recreate that. But we’ll be very concentrated on fish. I’m working with some friends who are smokers and we’ll eventually have our own smoker here.”
