Restaurant Buzz: Escondite

0

The Mexican fusion Escondite is the newest venture for Yann Levy and Moti Meslati, the owners behind Biiru izakaya. Like its sister restaurant, the mood at the operator-designed 70-seat establishment is cosy and unpretentious, and the space features vintage Mexican artwork, high ceilings and a long bar where customers can throw back mezcal-based signature drinks, spirits or virgin cocktails. Chef L.P. Rouleau’s cuisine features a selection of tapas, ceviches and grilled meats. But the taco menu gets star billing, with combinations such as pork belly with grilled pineapple, braised tongue with pickled shallots and crispy cauliflower with black bean purée. The El Clandestino taco pays homage to Montreal’s signature sandwich, with smoked meat, smoked mustard crema, mirin and green tabasco pineapple slaw ($7 for two).
