Restaurant Buzz: Grey Gardens

0

The newest venture from Jen Agg (The Black Hoof, Cocktail Bar, Rhum Corner) and Mitch Bates (Momofuku Shoto, Momofuku Ko), Grey Gardens in Kensington Market serves up a seasonal à la carte menu of snacks (oysters, cheese, bread with butter and schmaltz) and more substantial plates with an emphasis on seafood and vegetables.

The kitchen, helmed by executive chef Mitch Bates and chef de cuisine Peter Jensen, also turns out pasta dishes, including one made with gigli noodles, cheddar, hot sauce and paprika ($21). A private room downstairs caters to groups with a family-style menu.

While the cocktail list is short, Grey Gardens offers an impressive selection of imported ciders and private-order wines chosen by general manager and sommelier Jake Skakun.

The 55-seat space is filled with polished brass, marble, vintage glass and ceramic pieces. Reservations are required for a seat in the back dining room or along the kitchen counter, but walk-ins are welcome at the bar and a couple of tables by the entrance.
