Restaurant Still Closed After Outbreak

SCARBOROUGH, Ont. – Ruby Chinese Restaurant remains closed after two failed health inspections by Toronto Public Health last week.

This comes after a salmonella outbreak that has led to 22 confirmed cases and 15 suspected cases, including the death of one elderly man. The outbreak, which is believed to have taken root between Sept. 12 and Sept. 20, possibly due to chicken or duck, remained closed over the long weekend with reports that the owners had difficulty securing a pest control company during the short holiday break.

The eatery near Finch Ave. E and McCowan Rd. was shut down after a lunchtime inspection Wednesday (Oct. 7) revealed that some foods weren’t “protected from contamination, utensils and cooking surfaces weren’st adequately cleaned, and raw meat wasn’st at the right temperature.” Officials said there was also a cockroach infestation and a dirty floor,” the Toronto Star reports. A second inspection produced the same results on Friday, October 9.
