Rita’s Italian Ice to Open 10 Units in Calgary

CALGARY — Rita’s Italian Ice has big plans to open 80 units in Canada within five years, including 10 units in Calgary, reports the Calgary Herald. The frozen- treat shop has begun operating inside Joey’s Urban restaurants and from a mobile trailer. It also has a local factory where it creates flavours for the ice treats and frozen custard.

The Trevose, Pa.-based frozen treat shop specializes in traditional Italian ice made fresh daily with real fruit, as well as shakes and custard. “We’re unique in Canada,” said Steve McDonough, president of Canada Water Ice Company Ltd., which owns the master franchise rights for Rita’s Italian Ice in Canada. “I just happen to live here [in Calgary]. Ideally we would be starting in Ontario in the market. That’s where the big food companies and the big franchise companies are. But when we think about what our economy is doing here in Calgary, maybe it’s not the wrong place to do it,” said McDonough. “We’re open to new things.” [calgaryherald.com]
