Saint John Pub and Inn Robbed at Gunpoint

SAINT JOHN, Nfld. — Two Saint John hospitality businesses, the Somerset Pub and the Colonial Inn, were robbed at gunpoint within two days of each other.

A masked gunman who may have been responsible for both thefts, robbed the inn on Thursday (Sept. 1) and escaped on foot.

“This is a cost not only in cash loss, but it’s also psychological trauma for employees,” Mostofa Iqbal, the inn’s owner, told CBC News.

Iqbal was also robbed last year. “The same place getting hit twice in two years — it’s almost like getting hit by lightning twice in your lifetime,” Iqbal told The Daily Gleaner. “It shouldn’st happen, but maybe the economy has something to do with it.”

Police are investigating both incidents. “Armed robbery is a very dangerous incident and potential for injury is very high when someone commits a robbery with a weapon,” Sgt. Glen Hayward of the Saint John police told The CBC. “It’s being taken very seriously.”
