Seal Hunt Quota Criticized

The sealing industry is under attack again as animal activists protest the harp seal quota for the annual hunt, which is expected to begin next Monday.

Earlier this week the federal government announced this year’s 400,000 quota that was set despite news that fewer harp pelts are being sold and scientist reports that there should be fewer seals hunted.

“It’s the same as last year’s quota and that was the highest quota for harp seals in history,” Rebecca Aldworth, executive director of Humane Society International/Canada, was quoted as saying by The Globe and Mail.

According to Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the current harp seal population is nearly eight million.
