Senators to Sup on Seal in Ottawa?

OTTAWA — Canada has come under fire from the international community for its annual seal hunt. When Sir Paul McCartney lent his weighty support to the cause, and made the journey to Îles de la Madeleine northeast of P.E.I. to be photographed with young pups in 2006, he called the hunt “a stain on Canada.”

Perhaps our Governor General and Prime Minister aren’t the biggest Beatles’ fans. In lending their support to Inuit hunters, both Michaelle Jean and Stephen Harper have publicly eaten seal meat since McCartney’s Canadian trek and, more importantly, since the European Union voted this past May to place a ban seal products.

Now, it’s looking like every Canadian parliamentarian is going to get the chance to try it, too. According to cbc.ca’s Rosemary Barton, the parliamentary restaurant is hoping to start serving seal meat this coming spring, from a distributor from the same Magdalen Islands Sir Paul visited. Moreover, a seal tasting is slated for early next month.
