Seven Wineries Form First Appellation N.S. Wine

HALIFAX — Seven Nova Scotia wineries have formed the Tidal Bay Standard brand.

Each of the seven wineries — which include Benjamin Bridge, Blomidon Estate Winery, Jōst Vineyards, Gaspereau Vineyards, Domaine de Grand Pré, Petite Riviere and Avondale Sky — will make one wine each using set guidelines that place emphasis on the region’s flavour profile.

“It’s the first appellation wine for Nova Scotia,” Jurg Stutz, winemaker at Domaine de Grand Pre, is quoted as saying in Halifax’s Chronicle Herald. “Basically, what that means is the wine comes with a set of standards. Within the winery association, there was a technical committee that put the standards together, the overall style of the product. What we were looking for was lower alcohol, a little bit off-dry, aromatic, good, crisp acidity.”
