SIAL Canada Names SIAL Innovation Grand Prize Winner

TORONTO — The winner of the SIAL Innovation contest was revealed yesterday, during the first day of SIAL Canada 2017. The grand prize was awarded to Taj Food, Minami Inc. for its Saffron Sugar Cube.

The winner will have the chance to travel around the world as they visit all of the SIAL network’s shows, which will be held in Canada, China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Paris and Abu Dhabi. The grand prize also includes $30,000 from Nielsen to help get the product to market, as well as free exhibition space at all SIAL shows.

The Saffron Sugar Cube beat out nine other finalists to claim the SIAL Innovation 2017 grand prize. The winning product was chosen by the 2017 SIAL Innovation Jury, which consisted of Dana McCauley, CEO, Blue Unicorn Innovation; Karen Proper, technical manager, Product & Process Development, Consulting & Technical Services, NSF International; Marie-France Gibson, VP, Private Brands, Metro Inc.; Birgit Blain, president, Birgit Blain & Associates Inc.; John Placko, culinary director, Modern Culinary Academy and Powder for Texture; Jane Dummer, principal and founder, Jane Dummer Consulting; Laura Calder, writer and television host; Brian Hircock, president, Raining Communications.

The ten contest finalists are on display at the SIAL Innovation space for the duration of SIAL Canada 2017, which is taking place at the Enercare Centre in Toronto from May 2 to 4.
