CALGARY — Denver’s Smashburger burger chain is preparing to enter the Canadian market with plans to open two Calgary locations in May and June.

“There are some good burger options in the marketplace that’ve done a great job of growing the appetite for better burgers in Canada,” Dave Prokupek, CEO of Smashburger told F&H. “We believe there’s room for additional growth in the space, and we’ll fight hard to become the local favourite for burger lovers in Calgary.”

The Calgary Smashburger menus will include the Calgary Burger, which is a made-to-order, 100-per-cent certified Angus beef, created to appeal to local taste profiles. The burger will be dressed with Canadian grilled onions, pepper jack cheese, applewood smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato and Dijon mayo. The Calgary menu will also offer a new twist on Canadian poutine. The mushroom poutine will be made with garlic sautéed mushrooms, cheese curds and gravy.

Prokupek is expecting to open 10 to 15 Smashburger company locations in Calgary and Edmonton. He is also hoping to expand the chain to Vancouver and Toronto.
