Sockeye Squabble

VANCOUVER — According to a recent Globe and Mail story, a battle is brewing over a recent decision by the British-based Marine Stewardship Council to certify that the sockeye salmon fishery in the Fraser and Skeena Rivers as sustainable.

The certification has various environmental groups crying foul, with one representative calling the decision “absurd.” According to the article, last fall about one million salmon returned to the Fraser, instead of the expected 10.6 million.
