STRATFORD, Ont. — The Savour Stratford Perth County Culinary Festival, a celebration of the city’s food and farming culture, is set to run from Sept. 21 to 23.
The festival’s proximity to local farmland is key to its success. “ It’s so close to the farmers, so close to the producers, and so close to where we’re trying to get back to,” says Chuck Hughes, celebrity chef and restaurateur. “It’s fun to see a place like this is so far ahead of the big cities.”
Author and culinary activist Anita Stewart, believes the local farming community contributes to Canadian food culture. “There’s a synergy in the city, and it’s here in one of the most promising culinary regions in the country,” she said.
A culinary stage returns to the festival this year and will host David Rocco presenting his family’s favourite recipes; Carl Heinrich, a Top Chef Canada winner giving a cooking demo; chef Andrew George Jr., a First Nations Canadian; and Geoff Hopgood from Halifax, a champion of sustainable Maritime cuisine.
A farmers market will take place during the weekend, along with tutored tastings, food pairings, street-food vendors and performers. Local dairy owner Ruth Klahsen will make an appearance at the Chefs’ Learning Centre where she’ll show festival goers how to make cheese at home.
