TORONTO — For National Sauce Month, Subway Canada has uncovered the saucy habits and behaviours and Canadians. According to The Harris Poll, Canadians are sauce lovers, with 70 per cent agreeing that adding sauce to a sub is a must. In response, this month, the company has launched MOJO, a new limited-edition sauce that boasts a creamy and smoky taste with a blend of herbs and cayenne pepper.
Additional poll findings include:
- Albertans are especially keen to try all the sauces, with two-thirds sharing that customizing their sub is important to them.
- Consumers in B.C. and Quebec take a simple approach, with more than half sticking to the basics, such as mayonnaise in La Belle Provinces, where it’s the most popular Subway condiment.
- Gen Zs and millennials across the country are most likely to opt for customization, with 56 per cent chossing to layer two or three sauces to create their own mix.
- Forty per cent of Canadians prefer a spicy sauce. More than a quarter of Gen-X consumers prefer the heat.
- Savoury sauces top the charts nationally, with 55 per cent of consumers selecting them as their favourite flavour profile.
- The sweetest province is Quebec, with 14 per cent of consumers ranking sweet sub sauces as their favourite.
“Celebrating National Sauce Month is a natural fit for us and we’re encouraging Canadians to get creative with their sauce combinations,” says John Botelho, chef at Subway Canada. “With 16 delicious options, there’s something for every sauce aficionado — while mayonnaise is our most popular condiment, sauces like Chipotle Southwest, Peppercorn Ranch and Smoky Honey Mustard, made with Canadian mustard and honey, are also guest favourites.”
