Top Chef Taps McEwan

TORONTO — Food Network Canada and Insight Production Company Ltd. are turning up the heat on the production of the premier season of Canada’s Top Chef, naming Toronto celebrity chef Mark McEwan the show’s head judge.

“We’sre thrilled to work with Insight Productions and Mark McEwan to uncover a roster of talented individuals from across the country,” said Karen Gelbart, senior vice-president, Content, Lifestyle Channels, Canwest Broadcasting. “Mark McEwan is an industry genius and the level of creativity, skill and determination he’sll expect from the Top Chef Canada competitors will make for tough competition.”

For his part, McEwan — owner of North 44, Bymark and One restaurants, McEwan Fine Food Store and host of Food Network Canada’s The Heat — is looking forward to the challenge. “It’s an absolute honour to be a part of such an exciting project that will showcase the range of culinary talent this country has to offer,” he says. “I’sve been in the food and service industry for over 30 years and look forward to sharing that expertise with the chosen competitors on Top Chef Canada.”

The country’s best up-and-coming culinary stars, aged 19 and older, are encouraged to visit foodnetwork.ca to download the application form. Applicants must also create a short video to showcase their cooking skills and on-camera personality. Candidates will be selected to compete for the chance be crowned Canada’s top chef and win a $100,000 prize.

The national casting call for Top Chef Canada, which will air next spring on Food Network Canada, begins today.
