MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — Friends of We Care’s latest bowl-a-thon in Mississauga, Ont., raised more than $260,000 for Easter Seals Camps yesterday.

These events really encompass what Friends of We Care as an organization is all about; we are a passionate, dedicated group of professionals from all facets of the foodservice industry coming together under one roof. Together we raise funds to enrich the lives of children with disabilities by enabling them to attend camps designed specifically for their needs, allowing them to participate in activities that they would otherwise not be able to do elsewhere,” said Kevin Collins, executive director of Friends of We Care, based in Aurora, Ont.

The ’70s-themed event attracted more than 450 members of the foodservice industry who spent the afternoon bowling in groovy, colourful garb and raising additional funds through raffle prizes. The top teams were Cardinal Meat Specialists, which raised $77,522 and took home the Mike Stoner Memorial Trophy, which honours the long-serving committee member, Mike Stoner. Sysco Canada raised $67,264 and Aramark Canada raised $48,005.

Each year, Friends of We Care bowl-a-thons are hosted in major cities across Canada. In addition to recent events held in Halifax (raising $4,760) and Vancouver (raising $17,600), two more events are set to take place in Calgary on Jan. 30 and in Edmonton on Feb. 26.
