WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. will re-open its land and ferry border crossings to fully vaccinated Canadians next month, ending a 19-month closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

An opening date of November 8 was announced Friday, but a number of details are still being worked out, including the type of documentation that will be accepted as well as guidance about travellers who received mixed doses of vaccines or the AstraZeneca vaccine.

“For months now, we’ve heard from businesses that are suffering and families distraught over the separation imposed by the continued border shutdown,” said Brian Higgins, New York Congressman, in a press release. “The sigh of relief coming from northern border communities following this announcement is so loud I can practically be heard on either end of the Peace Bridge.”

“Cross-border travel creates significant economic activity in our border communities and benefits our broader economy,” said Alejandro Mayorkas, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security in a news release. “We’re pleased to be taking steps to resume regular travel in a safe and sustainable manner.”
