SASKATOON — Chef Dan Walker of Weczeria Food & Wine took home top honours at the Saskatoon 2010 Gold Medal Plates Competition this past weekend.

“It’s amazing,” said Walker at the event, which celebrates both Canadian cuisine and athletic achievement. “Everybody worked really hard…it was a whole team effort to win this. I’sm just a public face.”

The winning chef, whose wild boar belly and Yukon Gold potato gnocchi dish impressed judges, beat out chef Ryan Marquis of the Delta Bessborough, who emerged with a silver medal, and chef Anthony McCarthy of The Saskatoon Club, who took bronze.

Walker will now have the chance to compete at the Canadian Culinary Championships in the Gold Medal Plates finale, which is set to take place in Kelowna, B.C. between Feb. 18 and 19.
