ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — An application to open a pub on Duckworth Street in St. John’s, N.L., close to the National War Memorial, has been rejected by The Royal Canadian Legion.
Chris Andrews, musician and owner of the proposed restaurant-style pub to be named Newfoundland Embassy, pitched the idea to the city’s planning committee last month.
As the frontman of Shanneyganock, a local band, Andrews described the restaurant as providing food and acoustic entertainment. He also planned to devote an area of the restaurant to the province’s military history, with artifacts and medals.
The city required approval from the veteran’s organization before allowing any bar within 50 metres of the National War Memorial, but Andrews’ bid was rejected by the legion.
“There are enough clubs/bars in the downtown area without establishing one so close to a place of respect and honour,” reads the letter from Aiden Crewe, president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Command of the Legion, according to The Telegram.
Andrews plans to scout a new site for the pub.
