TORONTO — Mississauga, Ont.’s International Centre was abuzz with activity this past Saturday at the Friends of We Care’s annual gala, where awards were handed out and money was raised to send disabled kids to camp.

“This evening is really for you; it’s our way of saying thank you for your ongoing support,” said Dan Valade, co-chair of the event, upon welcoming more than 900 corporate sponsors, We Care members and other guests to dinner, following a cocktail reception with eight chef’s stations (left).

During the dinner, which was emceed by Breakfast Television’s Kevin Frankish and Friends of We Care ambassador Sydney Weaver, guests were serenaded by Justin Hines, Tyanna O’Connor as well as Pauly and the Goodfellas while they signed up for the silent auction, which featured jewellery, art, electronics and more.

After a dessert of cake pops, doughnut pops and brownies, three awards were handed out. The Corporate Friend of We Care Award was presented to International Pacific Sales Ltd.; the We Care Hall of Fame Award was presented to Aubrey MacMillan, CEO of Stewart Foodservice and the Gary Wright Humanitarian Award was presented to Mark Cator. “This recognition is very humbling, because most of the time I’ve felt like I was taking far more from this organization than I was giving,” said Cator, a 10-year We Care supporter, upon accepting the award. “Thank you for that.”

The night was capped off with the presentation of a cheque worth more than $1 million to Easter Seals, which helps children with physical disabilities.
