MONTREAL — The Salon International de l’Alimentation (SIAL) attracted thousands of foodies and foodservice industry professionals to the Palais des Congrès de Montréal, from May 9 to 11.

As in previous years, several countries, including Italy, Austria and France, flew their flags at SIAL. What’s more, Maroc Export encouraged investment in Morocco’s foodservice industry with a call to ‘discover the rich taste from Morocco.’ The African country showcased native seafood, citrus and vegetables, but its olive oil received most attention.

Colombia’s tourism and foreign investment arm, Proexport Colombia, was happy to be part of the show, too. “SIAL 2012 was a great opportunity to showcase some of Colombia’s most unique food products and producers,” said Alvaro Concha, trade commissioner, Colombian Government Trade Commission in Canada. “The recent signing of the Canada-Colombia free-trade agreement has opened up the border for more trade between the two countries, including in the agri-business sector.”

Del Alba S.A., the only macadamia nut processor in Colombia, was at the show. “We are here to announce to Canada that our macadamia and soya nut products are available. We welcome the opportunity to do business with Canada,” said Jaime Dorronsoro, director, Del Alba. The simple, family run operation has grown into a large, modern plant processing macadamia buts and Soyitas, a new soya nut-based snack.

Cooking demos, educational sessions and presentations by key industry leaders were also highlighted at the show. Competitions included the Cuisine by SIAL, a best coffee award known as Coffee Cup by SIAL, which Kaloko, Mountain Thunder (Hawaii) and Finca Hartmann (Panama) won. Meanwhile, the Olive D’or awards for best olive oil were presented in three categories. Ottobratico (Italy) was awarded for best light oil; San Pietro (Chile) was awarded in the medium category and Rincon de la Subbetica Alamoda (Spain) won in the intense-oil category.
