You’re Going to Need More Garam Masala

This month, we’ve gathered 10 delicious ways of sprinkling, stirring, mixing and roasting the flavourful South Asian spice blend Garam Masala into items already found on your menu.

Garam Masala is a gorgeous blend of ground spices, originating from the Indian subcontinent, and is the perfect addition to add a little kick to some of your favourite dishes. Typically a concoction of cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, cumin, coriander, nutmeg and peppercorns, this staple blend injects warmth and soul into everything from scrambled eggs to traditional curries.

If you’re stuck for ideas on how to use Garam Masala, here are 10 of our favourites:

1. Add to soup
Looking for a soup recipe with a little extra warmth? How about adding a little Garam-Masala mix to your favourite soup, such as this tasty butternut squash and carrot soup with roasted Garam Masala.

2. Sprinkle in scrambled eggs
How do you like your eggs in the morning? We like to add a little zing to ours with a sprinkling of Garam Masala.

3. Enhance your condiments
Take your condiments to the next level by mixing in some Garam Masala. Make your mayo a little more interesting with the spice of Garam Masala, then incorporate it into everything from sandwiches to deviled eggs. Or if you’re making a traditional Indian dish, why not elevate your dish with some savoury yoghurt dipping sauce complete with a touch of the exotic spice mix.

4. Pair with fruit
We love this sweet and spicy twist on the typical pot-sticker recipe, combining juicy pear with Garam Masala for a mouth-watering dessert.

5. Try a twist on steam buns
Steam buns are a type of filled bun or bread-like dumpling native to many Chinse cuisines. Garam Masala is the perfect complimentary flavour, such as in this curry beef and bone marrow recipe.

6. Use with cumin
Cumin and Garam Masala are the perfect combination, used in many traditional dishes.  Rub into lamb shoulder for a full-flavour dish, complete with black chickpeas and crispy cauliflower.

7. Boost your fried chicken
Fried chicken is an all-round favourite. But have you ever thought of adding an East Asian kick with a hint of Garam Masala to your crispy wings?

8. Elevate your hot chocolate
If you’re looking for something a little richer, sprinkle a little Garam Masala into your hot-chocolate mix. It will add a fresh, spicy taste, and give off the most delicious aroma. For something even more different, add the tropical taste of coconut, too!

9.  Roast with vegetables
Impress your guests by adding something a little different to roasted vegetables. Shower a little warming Garam Masala over brussels sprouts and carrots before they head into the oven.

10. Jazz up cookies
Take your dessert menu to the next level and freshen things up by adding Garam Masala to your dry mix, such as in this spiced brown sugar shortbread cookie recipe.
