TORONTO – After a recent email hoax circulating on the Internet challenged the beef sourcing practices of McDonald’s Canada, the national Beef Information Centre (BIC) has affirmed the fast-food company’s commitment to using beef from Canadian producers.

Every day two and a half million customers are served at McDonald’s outlets across the country, and it is estimated that more than 64-million pounds of locally-raised Canadian beef makes its way onto the company’s annual shopping list.

“McDonald’s Canada has made a commitment to Canadian beef, which today translates into the company using 100 per cent Canadian beef for all its burger offerings,” says John Gillespie, BIC chairman and producer from Ayr, Ont., in a McDonald’s Canada press release. “As the largest foodservice purchaser of beef in Canada, this is a significant alliance for Canada’s beef industry.”

The first email on the subject, which originally appeared in the U.S., morphed into a Canadian email that surfaced this year. A statement of McDonald’s Canada’s purchasing practices can be found on its website, where it was put in an attempt to dispel the myth that the company sources beef internationally.
