TORONTO — Maple Leaf Foods celebrated the official opening of Canada’s largest commercial bakery in Hamilton, Ont., this week.

The 385,000-square-foot Trillium bakery was designed to be eco-friendly in a bid to meet certification standards for LEED, a green building rating standard. “We are particularly proud of the environmental features we engineered into the facility to meet rigorous environmental standards,” said Michael McCain, president and CEO of Maple Leaf Foods. “The new bakery also provides us with dedicated space to support new product innovation, supported by our leadership in providing Canadians nutritious, fresh and wholesome bakery products.”

Trillium will provide up to 300 full-time jobs and 30 seasonal hourly positions; it will produce white and whole-wheat bread, English muffins and tortillas, using 100-per-cent Canadian wheat.
