MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis. – More than 170 golfers gathered under sunny skies at Ironwood Golf Course in Sussex, Wis. to participate in the Fifth Annual Jerry Maahs Memorial Golf Outing on August 10. Far surpassing previous years, participants raised a total of $56,000 for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society.
Alto-Shaam founder, Jerry Maahs, passed away from Lymphoma in 2006. The following year, Alto-Shaam employees organized the first of what has become an annual charity event in an effort to help find a cure for this common blood disease. Since its inception, Alto-Shaam employees and friends have raised a grand total of $123,129 for cancer research.
While not able to personally attend the event, Marianne Maahs, 82-year-old widow of Alto-Shaam company founder Jerry Maahs, sent gratitude and encouragement via son and company COO Steve Maahs, saying, “What we are trying to do today, on this fifth anniversary, is to raise a total of fifty thousand dollars for more research and hopefully save many more lives, so that Lymphoma will become the most curable cancer.”
$28,000 was raised on the day of the event thanks to generously donated raffle prizes, a silent auction, ball toss competition, putting challenge, 50/50 raffle and par three contests. With a dollar-for-dollar company match, Alto-Shaam donated an additional $28,000, ultimately surpassing the $50,000 objective.
Thanks to the monies donated from all involved, a research grant for Aggressive Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma will carry the Jerry Maahs Memorial name.
