Anita Stewart Celebrates 20th Anniversary

ELORA, Ont. — Food Day Canada is celebrating its 20th anniversary on August 5, 2023. Food Day Canada was founded by the late Anita Stewart, C.M. in 2003 as a show of support for Canadian farmers. Since then, it has grown and evolved into a national celebration for Canadians to share their food and their stories with each other while leading other nations in cultural diversity, food ethics, magnificent flavours and fun.

As part of the 20th anniversary celebration, icons will be lit up red and white from coast-to-coast to shine a light on Canadian cuisine from parliament buildings to Niagara Falls. Restaurants and chefs are featuring Canadian ingredients on hundreds of menus. Farmers markets and special events will come to life as people celebrate the great bounty that’s local food everywhere.

The kickoff to Food Day Canada will take place in Elora, Ont. on the Jack R. MacDonald pedestrian bridge over the Grand River on August 1 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. A VIP cake cutting at 4 p.m. will symbolize the opening of the event and celebrate the new Food Day in Canada Act passed earlier this year.

The bridge will be filled with barbecues, picnic tables, local chefs, live music, seasonal food and community spirit. There is also a beer garden featuring Canadian wine, local micro-brews and cocktails. Tasting plate tickets are also available on site.
