Montreal Restaurateurs Threaten City with Legal Action

MONTREAL — The planned redesign of Old Montreal’s Place Jacque-Cartier is putting 14 restaurant owners and the city at odds with each other.

The restaurateurs say the planned upgrades to Place Jacque-Cartier, which are part of Montreal’s 375th birthday celebration, raise safety, health and financial concerns. As a result, the restaurateurs asked for a meeting with Montreal mayor Denis Coderre.

The owners’ primary concern is the centralized terrace would be too far from their restaurants and their wait staff would have to consistently navigate through busy foot traffic.

The city is paying for the construction of the new terrace, but the restaurateurs would have to rent out their assigned sections.

The restaurant operators are threatening to file an injunction if the city doesn’t reconsider the planned design.
