Seattle’s Shanik Restaurant to Close

SEATTLE — Meeru Dhalwala has announced the ending of her Seattle’s Shanik restaurant, but she’s excited about new beginnings for her cuisine in Canada at the next outpost of Vij, which she’ll operate with her husband, Vikram Vij, in July.

In an email to The Vancouver Sun, Dhalwala wrote that the modern Indian concept received many accolades, including a James Beard nomination for Best New Restaurant in the U.S. in 2012, but it didn’t generate enough business during the week. “Shanik, as a standalone world, is beautiful in all ways — food, people and our love for one another. We enjoyed every bit of it, but despite very busy Friday and Saturdays, our weeknights were too slow in this South Lake Union location,” Dhalwala wrote.

The chef plans to transplant her Shanik recipes to the new Vij’s restaurant, while penning her third book, which will be published by Penguin.

Shanik will close March 22.
