TORONTO — Elycia Ross, of Vancouver Island University, has been named the winner of the USA Rice Federation’s first Culinary Student Recipe Competition, which was held at Toronto’s George Brown College yesterday.

Ross competed against three finalists to win $1,500 for her Mango Chicken Barbecue Rice.

Jordan Rusk of Fleming College in Peterborough, Ont., won second prize and $500 for his Southwestern Buffalo Cheesy Rice Balls; and Melissa Drutz of Toronto’s George Brown College earned the third-place spot and $250 for her Black and White Rice Coconut Pancakes with Tropical Fruit Compote.

“Today’s competitors should very proud of what they accomplished,” said Stefan Czapalay, chef, owner of Toronto’s Culinary Design Solutions and one of four event judges. “I was so impressed with their culinary skills and the high level of professionalism displayed. This competition confirmed that Canada’s culinary instructors are doing a remarkable job preparing their students for a successful career in the foodservice industry.”

The hunt for Canada’s best rice recipe began in September, when culinary students across the country were challenged to submit rice recipes for consideration. More than 50 recipes were submitted and judged before the finalists were chosen.
