TORONTO — The votes are in and the Spain-inspired Bar Isabel in Toronto has been named Canada’s Best New Restaurant by EnRoute magazine, while Vij’s Railway Express — a mobile Indian restaurant operated by chef Vikram Vij in Vancouver — won over the public, nabbing the magazine’s inaugural People’s Choice award.
“This year’s search wasn’t just about what was on the plate,” explained Andrew Braithwaite, a food writer who travelled the country in search of the best restaurants. “We went looking for good people who’ve dedicated themselves to delivering memorable experiences. From chefs to sommeliers, these are talented people we want to champion.”
The remaining establishments on the top 10 list of best new restaurants in Canada (listed in order) include: Shōtō (Toronto), Fogo Island Inn (Joe Batt’s Arm, N.L.), Supply and Demand (Ottawa), Pidgin (Vancouver), Carino Japanese Bistro (Calgary), Maison Publique (Montreal), Le Bouchon du Pied Bleu (Quebec City), The Acorn (Vancouver) and Electric Mud BBQ (Toronto).
