mcdonalds-friesTORONTO — McDonald’s Canada is cutting back on the fries it serves in its Happy Meals and adding a serving of low-fat strawberry yogurt as part of a broader health initiative that will begin testing in Canadian cities in September and roll out by the end of the year.

“It’s all part of our menu evolution, which is an ongoing process,” Louis Payette, McDonald’s Canada spokesman, is quoted as saying by CP. “We’re continuing to listen to our customers and trying to meet their needs. People are asking us for more variety, more choice, and we’sre glad to provide it to them.

French fry portions will be reduced from 71 grams to 31 grams. “It’s a step in the right direction,” Jennifer House, a registered dietitian, was quoted as saying by Postmedia News.

But it doesn’t end there, McDonald’s has announced plans to reduce calories in Happy Meals 20 per cent by offering apple slices without caramel sauce, fat-free chocolate milk and one-per-cent low-fat white milk.
