La Mezcaleria Hosts Soft Opening in Gastown

VANCOUVER — La Mezcaleria hosted its first friends and family services last weekend at its new Gastown location.

Located in the former home of Nicli’s Next Door, this is the second unit for Le Mezcaleria co-owners Marcelo Ramirez and Ignacio Arrieta, who opened the first restaurant on Vancouver’s Commercial Drive.

“It’s going to be different than the first place,” says Marcelo. “We don’t want to be a chain. It’s like we will have two children, each with their own personality.”

La Mezcaleria is the first restaurant in Vancouver to offer a wide variety of mezcals (a spirit distilled from mash made out of the steamed hearts of various species of agaves), as well as high-quality tequilas and cocktails inspired by the different regions of Mexico. The menu mirrors traditional Mexican recipes while sourcing organic ingredients locally and serving ocean-friendly seafood options, such as Guachile de Atun made with thinly sliced Ocean Wise yellow fin tuna dressed with a cilantro and serrano lime sauce, topped with red onions, cilantro, cucumber and fresh slices of avocado ($17).

Soft services will run all week and the restaurant is expected to fully open to the public on July 12.
