TORONTO — The team from Toronto’s Humber College won a gold medal at the international Culinary Olympics, held recently in Erfurt, Germany. Competing against 54 other teams, Humber’s team — made up of graduates, faculty and students — was one of only two Canadian entries to win gold in the Regional division.

Over the course of the event, which ran from Oct. 22 to 25, competitors had to prepare eight servings of:

  • three different appetizers
  • a five-course meal
  • petit-fours (four pastry varieties)
  • four different dessert plates
  • a buffet platter with three different varieties of terrines plus garnishes
  • four types of finger foods

“We couldn’t be more proud of our Humber Culinary Olympic team,” says Rudi Fischbancher, associate dean, School of Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism. “Competitions like these give students a chance to experience the challenge of working in a high-pressure culinary environment, while exposing them to some of the best chefs in the world. It’s an unparalleled learning opportunity.”
