Alberta Announces New Vaccine Requirements and COVID-19 Measures

CALGARY — Alberta has declared a state of public-health emergency and will implement new measures to boost vaccination rates and reduce transmission of COVID-19.

Starting today, new restrictions on restaurants, indoor gatherings, weddings and funerals, retail, entertainment venues and indoor sport and fitness will be implemented. Businesses or event organizers that choose to implement a proof of vaccination program or a recent negative COVID-19 test will be able to have an exemption to restrictions.

The new restrictions for restaurants include banning indoor dining for businesses that choose not to implement a proof of vaccination program, limiting outdoor dining to six people per table, maintaining the 10 p.m. liquor sales restriction and continuing limited capacity and physical distancing measures.

“We’re taking necessary and critical steps to prevent our health system from being overwhelmed and once again slow the spread of COVID-19 in Alberta,” says Premier Jason Kenney. “These steps are not easy for anyone, but with COVID-19 hospitalizations continuing to rise, particularly amongst the unvaccinated, we have no choice but to implement the proof of vaccination measures and temporary restrictions. We have overcome past COVID-19 waves and we will once again. I strongly urge anyone who has not yet been vaccinated to do so immediately. Please protect yourself, your loved ones and your community.”
