FLESHERTON, Ont. —Jonathan Gushue’s new restaurant, The Gate, has opened in Flesherton, Ont., with the help of food-and-beverage partners Jennifer Belanger (principal) and Phil De Montbrun (executive chef).

Located in Grey County, The Gate serves as the gateway to Grey Highlands, natural area of waterfalls, the Bruce Trail, Osprey Bluffs and the Saugeen and Beaver rivers. Surrounded by farmland and producers, the location is perfect for crafting a sense of place with food.

The 40-seat, open-concept casual Mediterranean restaurant is housed in a 150-year-old building with exposed brick which acts as a backdrop to a view into the small kitchen.

For the time being, The Gate will serve dinner only, with plans for a lunch trade in the future. The menu features 12 to 18 items that are veg forward and suitable for sharing. The restaurant’s wine selection is primarily Mediterranean but also showcases Ontario selections that complement the menu.

“It’s a Mediterranean-focused menu but with our unique perspective,” said De Montbrun, a Langdon Hall alumnus and former Noma chef de partie in an interview with VineRoutes magazine. “You’ll recognize the ingredients, but we’re going to think about them differently than you typically see. We want to cook great food and create great experiences.”
