Hamilton Restaurateur Takes Online Jab At Job Seekers

HAMILTON, Ont. — A Hamilton, Ont., restaurant owner isn’t shy about telling the public what he thinks about job seekers who aren’t serious about employment.

In a Kijiji ad posted Jan. 3, Hillbilly Heaven owner Cameron Bailey, who is looking to hire new workers for his barbecue restaurant, ranted about his experience with unreliable potential employees.

He pointed out, of all the interested job seekers he’s encountered, half don’t bother to return a call for an interview, while 75 per cent don’t show for an interview. He adds: when offered the job, 30 per cent don’t report for their first day of work. His ad urges job seekers to forgo sending a résumé and, instead, show up for an on-the-spot interview.

“We know Ontario’s overly generous unemployment and OW systems make it seem pointless to accept a job, but we want people that are better than that. It’s that simple,” reads the ad. “We know there are good, honest, hardworking people out there that are looking for a break.”

Bailey has since updated his ad, saying two workers had been hired since the ad was posted but failed to show up for their first shift.
