Summerside, P.E.I. welcomed its first Nepalese-Japanese inspired restaurant in July. Located at the PEI Ocean View Resort and Golf, the Red Maple Hibachi Grill offers hibachi-grill dishes.
“Hibachi cooking is of Japanese origin. But along with Japanese dishes we also have some Indian dishes, classic Island options and other specialties,” Uttam Thapa, the restaurant’s head chef and Nepal native, told the Guardian. “I’m Nepalese, cooking Japanese food in Canada.”
Menu items include samosas, papadums, hibachi steak, salmon teriyaki, hibachi shrimp, filet mignon and fried chicken — the restaurant’s specialty. Many of the dishes are cooked tableside by chef Thapa. Despite its international flavour, the restaurant prides itself on locally sourced foods.
