TORONTO — The newly renovated Evergreen Brick Works has opened in Toronto at what’s being called Canada’s first community environmental centre.

Evergreen, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting eco-friendly elements in urban areas, started to refurbish the Don Valley Brick Works eight years ago to create a new facility that will play host to both people and ideas. Environmental advocates will be welcome to use the building to discuss ecological issues, such as sustainability, urban ecology, transportation, energy and waste management.

“Torontonians are environmentalists by nature and our city has a reputation around the world as being a place of progress and excellence when it comes to environmental matters,” said Mayor David Miller. “The incredible Evergreen Brick Works project is yet another example of how we are helping Torontonians to become even greener while meeting our city building goals.”

The organization, which offers year-round programs and activities for members of the surrounding community, speaks to the growing trends in foodservice with a sustainable garden centre, a farmer’s market and children’s camps already expected to be hosted at the new site.

The new place is already abuzz with activity as the organization’s 4th annual Slow Food Evergreen picnic is set to take place at the new digs, at 550 Bayview Avenue, on Sunday, Oct. 3.
