10 KFC Restaurants in Newfoundland to Convert to Healthier Fare

NEWFOUNDLAND — Renee Marquis, a KFC franchise owner of 10 restaurants in Newfoundland is letting her franchise license expire so she can open healthier fare restaurants, reports the National Post.

“We have beautiful wild produce in Newfoundland; we’re surrounded by the ocean. I want to give people a fresh option, not just haul something out of a freezer or open up a tin and charge premium price for junk food.” said Marquis as quoted by the National Post.

Marquis decided to not sell her restaurants, but instead let her KFC franchise license expire and convert her stores into family style diners. The first new reinvented restaurant, “Oppy’s Diner” will open in Carbonear at the end of the summer and nine more restaurants will follow soon after.

Marquis’ father opened the first Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise on the island in 1960.
